Art Education 308
Art Education Curriculum: Theory, Methods, and Assessment - Fall 2022

While pursuing the ArtEd 308 course throughout the fall 2022 semester, this course assisted me in various ways. More specifically, pertaining to how this course assisted me in learning methods for assessing, I discovered the significance of qualitative in comparison to quantitative when considering how well students are retaining knowledge. Additionally, when addressing learning methods for teaching, I learned about what teaching strategies work for me in the classroom by engaging with students and a cooperating teacher during the required 40 hour practicum for this course.

Philosophy Poster

Leading into connections made to theorists from the past and present, I had the opportunity to present my findings of a philosopher focusing in education. As such, I had chosen Thierry De Duve, as shown in the image below, to introduce the new age of thinking when building connections between education and aesthetics.

Fiber Comfy Image & Lesson Plan

During the ArtEd 308 course, my peers and I had the opportunity to create a 'comfy.' Related to social and emotional learning, (SEL), this lesson allowed me to consider how to integrate an artistic lesson within the art room that students can utilize as a way to discover more about themselves, find comfort, or engage in a mindfulness practice. Included below is an image of the 'comfy' that I had made as well as a downloadable and in view one page lesson plan.

Mirror Etching Tile

Apart from the fiber arts lesson, we ended the ArtEd 308 semester with learning how to etch mirrors. Furthermore, by understanding how to teach young students about radial designs, symmetry, and composition, this lesson allowed for exploration and learning about positive and negative space.

Included below is an example of what the etched mirrors that the class had made looked like. Although mine is not pictured due to an initial crack turning into a shattered mirror, the process had taught me about the importance of careful craft, ambitious design, and learning about the new medium of etching cream!

Practicum Experience

Apart from the evidence of in-class learning experiences highlight above, the second half of the ArtEd 308 course included a 40 hour practicum experience in a classroom. While placed at the Menomonie High School, I had the opportunity to engage with student making artwork in a wide range of mediums that included ceramics and drawing as well as photography and painting. Additionally, within the 40 hours of required in-class experience, I had the opportunity to teach a 15 day lesson about painting to the advanced two-dimensional design students.

As such, highlighted below are images of my project sample(s) as well as three specific student outcomes from the mentioned lesson.

Included below are the finished outcomes of the lesson from three focus students.

The in-view PDF below includes the instructional materials that aided me in teaching the students the lesson that I had created.

The Lesson!

Included below is the lesson plan that I had created for the practicum experience. The lesson is based on the making of an acrylic painting that aligns with a particular time-of-day that was chosen by each student.

Circling back to one of the primary themes of the overall course, assessment, the PDF viewer below includes the rubrics that I had utilized to assess the students that I had taught.
